Love the outdoors? Why not enjoy skiing, hiking and biking in British Columbia's magnificent Rockies. The western province of Alberta, with the Canadian Rockies running through it provides the perfect vacation for the outdoor enthusiast. Edmonton, the capital of Alberta was the scene of the Klondike Gold Rush in 1898 and the oil boom of the 1960's. Many people choose Banff as the centre for exploring all the recreational activities which the area has to offer, the mountains, Lake Louise, the National Park and the sulphur pool names Upper Hot Springs. A popular diversion is a hike or gondola ride to the observation deck on Sulphur Mountain. During the summer, the Banff Festival of the Arts brings together music, dance and theatre companies for a variety of performances. British Columbia's beauty stretches through the varied terrain of the province. Nature lovers will enjoy a ferry cruise along the Inside passage or a visit to the Pacific Rim National park, the first national marine park in Canada. For something more leisurely, perhaps a visit to one of the various museums or the Native Heritage Museum. Qualicum Beach is very good for salmon fishing and beachcombing. The mountain range offers first class skiing in Winter and acts as a "back drop" in Summer for more laid-back activities, such as classical or bluegrass festivals, as well as golf tournaments.

The Pacific Ocean yields a great variety of seafood such as king crabs, oysters, shrimp and other shellfish as well as haddock, cod and salmon. Victoria Creams is a famous chocolate delicacy that you must taste. Alberta is world famous for beef. It may be sampled barbecued, grilled, braised or skewered with different complements. Unusual beef dishes are stew and biscuits cooked in rich grave. Beef mincemeat with fruits and spices are used in pies and tarts are also a traditional dish. |
